Harkers Island Real Estate
The intriguing and resourceful Harkers Island is located North Carolina´s beautiful and expansive Crystal Coast in Carteret County. Originally called Craney Island, it was home to a thriving band of Coree Indians. All that was left of the native inhabitation by the 20th century of the native inhabitation was a mountainous heap of seashells on the island´s east coast which the Coree´s had gathered up in a failed attempt to construct a shell bridge over to the Core Banks. Even so, that end of Harkers Island is now called "Shell Point," but the majority of the shells were used as road beds as early paved roads were construction.
Very sparsely populated until the late 1800´s, Harkers Island gained population with the evacuation of nearby Diamond City on Shackleford Banks due to hurricanes in 1896 and 1899. Suddenly, Harkers Island began to change to accommodate and flourish with its residents. Reconstruction of original schools, churches, and businesses began, as well as the many new ones that were created.
In today´s world, Harkers Island boasts approximately 2000 permanent residents, as well as many others who summer and fall fish there. Imagine your family living the lifestyle, and experiencing the charms, tranquility and privacy of island living. That´s what Harkers Island has in store for you. |
